Description:

A small compact eagle, dark brown above with pale scapular patches. Head, body and wing-coverts whitish, brown or rufous, respectively, in pale, dark and rufous morphs. Always shows white shoulder patches, pale median-covert panel, pale wedge on inner primaries, white crescent on uppertail-coverts, and greyish undertail with darker centre and tip.


Distribution:

Common passage migrant and summer visitor to western and northern parts of Gilgit-Baltistan. Occurs in well-wooded country in hills and plains, pine forests, also semi-desert, groves around cultivation and villages, up to 3500m.


Behavior:

Hunts in open or wooded areas; captures prey mainly on ground, stooping from air or after spotting prey from vantage perch; sometimes pair may hunt together. Feeds mostly on small and medium-sized birds, from small passerines to pigeons, gamebirds, domestic fowl and corvids; also mammals, reptiles and some insects.
